A New Show and We Welcome 6 New Artists

The Kanata Civic Art Gallery is pleased to introduce six new local artists who join the Gallery with the show “New Arrivals”, opening February 10th, 2016.

Karen Bell
Website: www.belleimages.ca

Born in Hamilton, ON, Karen has lived in Canada, Mexico & the USA, travelling extensively, photographing the world for over twenty years. Starting with a B.A., English & Psychology from Carleton University, she continued her education at Algonquin College, graduating with Honours from the Photographic Arts program.  She carried on taking courses in watercolour and pottery at the “Crealdé School of Art” while in Florida.  Karen did in-studio work at “Valberg Imaging” as project manager and photography assistant for the photo book “Dare to Dream; A Celebration of Canadian Women”.

Karen owns “Belle Images & Design” and is a member of the Ottawa West Board of Trade. She loves the creative feeling from working with her photographic images.  The process of exploring a location, setting up a shot and taking that image into the digital darkroom, brings her energy, focus and allows her to seek out her inner creativity.  Karen mostly photographs the natural world, but enjoys capturing urban settings from her travels as well.

Julie Gagne

Based in Gatineau Quebec, Julie started learning art from a young age.  She received her first oil set as a child along with her first lessons.  She has studied visual art in Cégep and also has a graphic arts degree.  Mentoring with a professional artist, she continuously seeks to expand and improve her techniques. Julie studied under KCAG artist Wendy Quirt.

Julie began doing landscapes in oil and acrylic.  More recently she has branched out to wildlife. While oil has its benefits, she prefers acrylic to capture the precise details of wildlife. She takes her own reference photos. Julie loves nature and seeks to share the beauty of it through her art.

Marie Leger

Marie has taken many courses at the Ottawa School of Art using oils and has painted plein air landscapes for several years. A few years ago she discovered encaustics which is now her primary medium.

Mostly self-taught in the art of encaustics, She finds it an intriguing medium as it allows for layering, creating textures and luminosity. This medium is made with beeswax and damar resin with oil paint added for colour. Painting with melted wax requires letting go and allowing the wax to choose its path. The unpredictable nature of the medium allows beauty to be found in imperfection. The unexpected textures and results keep the process exciting and fresh. Marie usually paints from memory, as the years of plein air provided her with inspiration for her current style, often a mix of realism and abstraction.  Marie shows her work at the Ottawa Little Theatre; Promenade Arteast at the Shenkman Arts Center, and now at the KCAG. She has won awards with Arteast and the Ottawa Art Association.

Heather Lovato-Fraser

Heather has been a professional artist for many years with an extensive body of original artwork.  She has taken art courses at St. Lawrence College, design courses at Algonquin College and workshops to be constantly learning.  She studied under Mary Allen, Shirley Mancino, and Donna Lynd.  Heather was born and raised in Ottawa. Her mentor, a professional artist who studied under Henri Masson, and mother of a dear friend, coached and encouraged her to explore various art media.  Heather has experimented with pottery and sculpture but always return to her first love, painting. She paints abstracted vibrant street scenes primarily of Ottawa and the Ottawa Valley.  Currently she is painting with acrylics which enjoys because they dry quickly and make layering and glazing nice techniques to use. She also paints with oils but less frequently.

Heather gets great joy out of taking the expected and making it unexpected, painting every day in her studio. For her, it is always nice to work with other professionals, critique each other’s work, discuss new techniques and learn about new products.

Katherine Power
Website: www.kpowerart.com

Katherine is currently a student in the Bachelor of Fine Arts program specializing in painting and drawing. Her art revolves around themes in mental health awareness, chronic pain awareness, and portraiture and hyperrealism. As an artist, Katherine believes that it is very important to recognize these illnesses and to try and break down the barriers of stigma around them to make a positive difference in this world.

Catherine Timm
Website:  www.catherinetimm.com

Catherine is a professional visual artist who lives on the Ottawa River north of Ottawa, Ontario. She studied at the Ontario College of Art and Design in Toronto, and works primarily with textiles and stitch, although she is also known for her work with natural materials wire, and paint.

Catherine is inspired by the elements of nature, expressing her creativity through the exploration of textiles, fibres, paint, wire and thread.  She incorporates line, colour, shape, form, negative and positive space to communicate her interpretation of nature's features and create two and three dimensional collage. Her practice is inspired by sharing and learning about new processes with other artists as well as the influence of her natural surroundings.  She has used her knowledge as a quilt maker to explore nature through layering, gluing, stitching and manipulating wire to build two and three dimensional work.  As a member of International Arts Organizations, her art has won awards, been displayed in juried shows around the world, and hangs in private collections.
